The study program began in the winter semester of 2023. The program is currently in the process of program accreditation and the professional approval process.
Imagine that you have the unique opportunity to accompany women and families through an intensive phase of life. As a midwife, you are there from the very beginning: from the first heartbeat of a new life, the first breath of a newborn, and you accompany the process of becoming a family until the end of breastfeeding. If you study to be a midwife, you are choosing a career that is as fulfilling as it is challenging, and that plays a crucial role in the lives of many people.
With the practice-integrating bachelor's degree program in midwifery at the HGE and its practice partners, you can obtain the academic degree of Bachelor of Science and at the same time the state professional license as a midwife within seven semesters. Due to the reform of the Midwifery Act, the vocational midwife training has been converted into a university degree since 2020.
The HGE offers an innovative and comprehensive course of study that prepares students for the current and future challenges in the midwifery profession. You will acquire professional and personal skills on a scientific basis that will qualify you to work independently as a midwife in various care settings. The course includes theory at the university, practice-related study components in skills labs (realistic practice rooms and simulation rooms) and practical learning phases at our cooperation partners, clinics and midwifery facilities ( overview ). The theoretical courses include lectures, seminars, tutorials, exercises, problem-oriented learning, action-oriented learning and simulation-based learning. The practical training takes place during lecture-free periods, with our practical curriculum ensuring a high quality of training.

Issues relevant to midwifery will be identified and dealt with. You will acquire the professional, personal and practical skills to care for women and their families independently and responsibly. In addition, you will learn sound analysis, reflection and problem-solving skills so that you can clearly communicate and prove results.
The course consists of 21 theory modules and seven practical study phases in which skills from the entire spectrum of midwifery care are taught, including the following study areas:
For each module, technical, methodological, practical and interdisciplinary content, technical, methodological and interprofessional skills and key qualifications as well as learning and qualification goals are defined. The training goals for the primary university midwifery training, on the basis of which the bachelor's degree course qualifies, are laid down in federal law (Section 9 HebG). Appendices 1 and 2 of the HebStPrV form the basis for the acquisition of skills.
From the first to the seventh semester, the course includes skills and simulation training as well as practical placements.
A special feature of the dual degree program in midwifery at the HGE is thematic priorities in the areas of business administration, sustainability and digital transformation in health care. Against the background of overall social changes, increasing economic pressure and demographic change, new care models are needed in the clinical and non-clinical areas of midwifery care that ensure the care situation of women and their families. In this context, the different needs of structurally weak regions and urban conurbations are important. To this end, you will acquire the skills to design individual care offers on the basis of analyses as part of a health economics-oriented module.
Through joint teaching and learning units with the students of the Bachelor's degree program in Nursing, interprofessional learning is promoted at all learning locations of the theoretical and practical study phases.
