More information

The midwifery course at the HGE enables you to provide holistic and scientifically sound care to women and their families and thus qualifies you for direct professional work in all midwifery-relevant care areas. It prepares you for independent and complex midwifery work in the inpatient and outpatient sectors.

Comprehensive practical study phases, supervised and guided by the university, prepare you for the diverse spectrum of the relevant target groups and settings. You will gain a wide range of application-oriented knowledge in the field of midwifery in an interdisciplinary context, based on scientific findings and methods. Issues relevant to midwifery will be identified and dealt with. You will acquire the professional, personal and practical skills to care for women and their families independently and responsibly. In addition, you will learn sound analysis, reflection and problem-solving skills so that you can clearly communicate and prove results.

The course consists of 21 theory modules and seven practical study phases in which skills from the entire spectrum of midwifery care are taught, including the following study areas:

  • midwife-specific core tasks as a reserved activity,
  • Midwifery in the context of natural, social and human sciences and
  • Basis of midwifery science and research.

For each module, technical, methodological, practical and interdisciplinary content, technical, methodological and interprofessional skills and key qualifications as well as learning and qualification goals are defined. The training goals for the primary university midwifery training, on the basis of which the bachelor's degree course qualifies, are laid down in federal law (Section 9 HebG). Appendices 1 and 2 of the HebStPrV form the basis for the acquisition of skills.

From the first to the seventh semester, the course includes skills and simulation training as well as practical placements.

A special feature of the dual degree program in midwifery at the HGE is thematic priorities in the areas of business administration, sustainability and digital transformation in health care. Against the background of overall social changes, increasing economic pressure and demographic change, new care models are needed in the clinical and non-clinical areas of midwifery care that ensure the care situation of women and their families. In this context, the different needs of structurally weak regions and urban conurbations are important. To this end, you will acquire the skills to design individual care offers on the basis of analyses as part of a health economics-oriented module.

Through joint teaching and learning units with the students of the Bachelor's degree program in Nursing, interprofessional learning is promoted at all learning locations of the theoretical and practical study phases.

According to Section 24 Paragraph 1 of the Midwifery Act, the midwifery course at the HGE is completed when both the university examination and the state examination have been passed. Successful completion confers the academic degree of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). Passing the course is a prerequisite for being granted permission to use the professional title of “midwife”.
